Breaking Down The Photo: The Three of Ponte Rialto
While exploring Venice, Italy with my wife in August, 2022 I took this photo in a split moment. We were walking through the streets with these three gentleman in front of us. As we turned the corner I was presented with this wonderful scene full of light and life. I quickly focusing on the bridge and it’s expsoure, I adjusted my settings to expose for it silhoueting them. This is one of my favorite street photos from Italy.
This cinematic photo demonstrates several key photographic techniques that create its powerful mood and composition, come along with me:
Technical Elements
- Backlighting: The strong contrast between the dark foreground and bright background creates a silhouette effect
- Leading Lines: The narrow alley walls and archway naturally draw the eye through the frame
- Rule of Thirds: The subjects are positioned in the lower third, with the architectural elements filling the upper portions
Composition Elements
- Framing: The archway and buildings create a natural frame within the frame
- Depth: Three distinct layers - foreground (silhouettes), midground (alley), and background (bright arch)
- Symmetry: The balanced architectural elements on both sides create visual stability
Camera Settings
- Use a smaller aperture (f/8-f/11) to maintain sharpness while capturing the ambient light
- Expose for the highlights in the background to create dramatic silhouettes
- Position yourself low and shoot slightly upward to emphasize the architecture
The golden hour lighting adds warmth and drama, while the silhouetted figures add human interest and scale to the scene.
Thanks for joining me explaining one of my favorite photos.
